Director
Vishal Bhardwaj
returns with another intense love story in O Romeo, starring
Shahid Kapoor,
Triptii Dimri,
Avinash Tiwary and
Nana Patekar in key roles.
The film mixes romance, revenge, crime and emotional drama, making it a typical Vishal Bhardwaj style story filled with strong characters and intense storytelling. If you are planning to watch this film in theatres, here is the Bollywood DNA review before you book your tickets.
Rating: 3/5
Story: Love Turns Into Revenge
The story revolves around Afshan Qureshi and Mehboob, childhood lovers whose relationship ends in tragedy after Mehboob is killed due to a conspiracy involving gangster Jalal, a corrupt cop, a lawyer and a politician.
After losing her husband, Afshan’s only goal becomes revenge. For this, she approaches Ustara, a feared yet mysterious man with a dark past. What starts as a revenge mission slowly turns into a complicated emotional journey where relationships, loyalty and love get tangled in unexpected ways.
The film keeps the audience guessing whether Afshan will get justice and what role Ustara truly plays in her life.
What Works in the Film
The movie follows a familiar Bollywood formula of hero, heroine and villain, but the screenplay and direction make it engaging. Vishal Bhardwaj’s signature storytelling style is clearly visible throughout the film.
The dialogues are sharp, and the setting of old South Bombay gives a nostalgic feel. Action scenes are well choreographed, especially the final confrontation between Ustara and Jalal, which stands out as one of the highlights of the film.
Fans of Vishal Bhardwaj’s previous films will feel comfortable in this dark and emotional cinematic world.
What Doesn’t Work
Some scenes feel unrealistic and certain situations look forced, which slightly affects the overall impact. The film also lacks strong music, which is usually a major strength in Vishal Bhardwaj’s movies.
Except for the title track, most songs fail to leave a lasting impression. The editing could have been tighter, as the film feels a bit stretched in the second half.
Performances: Strong Acting Saves the Film
Triptii Dimri delivers one of her best performances and reminds audiences why she was praised in films like
Qala and
Bulbbul.
Shahid Kapoor shines as Ustara and completely owns the role with his intense screen presence.
Nana Patekar plays a layered police officer and shares strong chemistry with Shahid.
Avinash Tiwary impresses as the villain, making Jalal truly frightening with his expressions and voice.
Special appearances by
Vikrant Massey and
Tamannaah Bhatia add value, while
Aruna Irani leaves a mark even with limited screen time.
Final Verdict
If you enjoy dark love stories filled with passion, betrayal and revenge, O Romeo is worth watching. It may not be perfect, but strong performances and Vishal Bhardwaj’s direction make it an engaging watch for Bollywood fans.
