Priyadarshan Opens Up About Billu Barber Mistake, Says Too Many Songs Affected Film Featuring Shah Rukh Khan

Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan recently spoke honestly about one of his past films and admitted that he made a creative mistake while making the 2009 movie Billu Barber. In an exclusive interaction with Pinkvilla, the director revealed that adding too many songs in the film affected the screenplay and emotional impact, even though the movie featured superstars like Irrfan Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.

The filmmaker is currently busy promoting his upcoming horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla, but during the conversation he looked back at his earlier projects and shared what he could have done differently.

Priyadarshan on Showing Shah Rukh Khan’s Stardom in Billu Barber

When asked how difficult it was to portray Shah Rukh Khan as a superstar in Billu Barber, Priyadarshan said that there was no challenge at all. According to him, Shah Rukh Khan’s real-life stardom was enough to convince the audience.

The director said that he did not need to add anything special in the script to prove Shah Rukh’s popularity. Just presenting him as a star on screen was enough because his personality already carries that image.

He also spoke about the emotional climax of the film, where the character Sahir Khan talks about his childhood friend Billu. Many viewers felt that the emotional depth of the scene did not connect as strongly as expected, and Priyadarshan agreed with that feedback.

“Too Many Songs Was My Biggest Mistake” – Director Admits

During the interview, Priyadarshan clearly admitted that the film’s screenplay became weak because of excessive songs.

He explained that the movie had a very emotional story, but the flow was disturbed due to multiple song sequences. According to him, the ending could have been one of the most touching moments in Indian cinema, but the impact was reduced because the narrative lost its tightness.

The director openly said that including too many songs was the only major mistake he made while directing the film.
